Wastewater treatment technology that protects the environment

Put simply, a sewerage system is made up of a network of pipes that carry sewage from homes and businesses to the main sewers. In a perfect world, the pipes rely on gravity for the waste to flow into the main sewer but, in low-lying areas where the main sewer sits on higher ground than the domestic sewerage pipes, the sewage needs to be treated or transported to the main sewer in a different way. This is where sewage treatment plants and pumping stations come into use.

Sewage Treatment Plants

Where no mains sewerage connection is available, and subject to ground conditions, localised treatment is the only option. With the approval of local councils, the environment agency and British Water guidelines, treated effluent can be discharged to a drainage field or local watercourse.

The most common method of treatment for sewage is aerobic digestion, which is explained here in an extract from British Waters guide for users of packaged wastewater treatment plants:

‘Packaged Wastewater Treatment Plants that are CE certified generally work along similar principles with primary, secondary and even tertiary treatment stages that produce a high quality (low/no pollution) effluent. In simple terms sewage enters the chamber underground where it is acted upon by naturally occurring bacteria which break down the sewage into a non-polluting output or discharge. The key point to understand is that in order for the bacteria to grow and do its job, the environment in which it lives inside the treatment system needs to be ‘friendly’. As that environment is made up of whatever you put down the toilet, sink or drains, if you overload it - say with too much water in one go or with too many chemicals or harsh detergents - then the bacteria can suffer or even die.’

KEE NUFLOW

The KEE NuFlow forms the aerobic biological stage of a packaged wastewater treatment system. KEE NuFlow plants are available as compact packaged plants or as packaged modular systems.

These will treat domestic wastewater to achieve degrees of treatment, such as BOD removal, Nitrification and Phosphorus reduction. Packaged KEE NuFlow plants are available in a range of specifications or can be custom built.

The process involves primary settlement and removal of gross settleable solids, aeration through easily accessed fine bubble membrane diffuser system and diffusion of organic pollutants into the biomass.

The KEE NuFlow packaged plant is capable of treating wastewater up to 50PE (population equivalent).

Specialists in installation

We work closely with W.J. Hatt Ltd to offer design, manufacture, installation and commissioning for both domestic and industrial wastewater sewage systems on a site-specific basis. In addition to installing & commissioning new wastewater treatment plants & septic tanks, W.J. Hatt will also install the surrounding drainage pipework & manholes, along with designing & building the required drainage field (soakaway) for disposal of the effluent from the new plant.
